FINDING INSPIRATION IN SMALL BODIES: LADEN VALLEY ON THE NEW GUILD M-40 & M-50 STANDARD
When it comes to songwriting guitars, comfort and inspiration often go hand in hand. The new Guild® M-40 Standard and M-50 Standard guitars, meticulously crafted in the USA*, strike that perfect balance by combining the familiar warmth and tone Guild is known for with the inviting feel of a smaller, concert-sized body.
To explore what makes these new models so special, we caught up with Laden Valley, a singer-songwriter duo known for their intricate guitar interplay and rich harmonies. The pair recently added the M-40 Standard in Pacific Sunset Burst and the M-50 Standard in Natural to their lineup and shared how these instruments have already become a part of their creative process.
What do you like about the size of the M-40 / M-50 Standard?
"The M-40 has a punchy sound and the size of it is very inviting. I’m much more likely to pick it up throughout the day because of its size and because of that I’m writing more, playing more, and letting the instrument move me toward creating."
Sometimes inspiration comes from simplicity. The approachable body shape and effortless playability of these models make them the kind of guitars you want to keep within arm’s reach, always ready to spark a new idea.
Tell us about the thin "Vintage Gloss" finish on the M-40 / M-50.
"The finish on these guitars not only looks good but feels good to the touch. I can easily imagine it aging nicely over the years and developing the kind of patina you see in pre-war guitars. Matte finishes on anything look nice, too. Paint, cases, anything that has a texture that directly connects you with the material it’s made out of."
The new Vintage Gloss finish is a hallmark of these models. Thin and smooth to the touch, it highlights the natural grain of the tonewoods and allows the guitars to resonate freely, just as a well-loved instrument should.
In what applications do the M-40 and M-50 shine?
"The M-40 and M-50 both work best as songwriting guitars and getting together to play without any fuss. Their tonality also lends itself to the kind of duo guitar interplay that we gravitate toward—light strumming mixed with some picking and bluegrass runs. It feels as good going up the neck as it does working in the open position."
Whether used for solo songwriting, small sessions, or acoustic duets, both models deliver a balanced voice that cuts through yet blends beautifully, creating a versatile foundation for any style.
Tell us about the tone of the M-40 Standard.
"The M-40 sounds very much like the wood it’s made out of, with the warm reverberation of a cabin or cozy den. The tone lends itself to the feel of the wood and makes for a great companion to playing with another guitarist."
With its Sitka spruce top and mahogany back and sides, the M-40 Standard carries the classic warmth and midrange focus of Guild’s vintage M-style guitars: earthy, articulate, and full of character.
Tell us about the tone of the M-50 Standard.
"The M-50 has the kind of tone that jumps out of your hands and cuts through the mix when playing with other people. I was surprised by how responsive the guitar is to playing with a pick, with the sound jumping to the front of a jam when you need it to. On the other end, the guitar really settles in when strumming and fingerpicking and has the kind of tone you want when you’re by yourself singing or writing. Hearing the sound of this guitar really makes you want to write the kinds of songs that are fun to play and share with other players."
The M-50 Standard, built with a Sitka spruce top and Indian rosewood back and sides, offers a more dynamic tonal range—bright, resonant, and powerful enough to hold its own in a mix, yet nuanced for intimate playing.
Whether you're drawn to the warm, woody tone of the M-40 Standard or the articulate brilliance of the M-50 Standard, both guitars embody the craftsmanship and soul that define Guild’s American-made acoustics. For Laden Valley, they’ve already become more than instruments; they’re creative partners.
